How to Decide If a Splurge Is Worth It
We all have those moments: something catches your eye, you fall in love instantly… and then comes the price tag. Whether it’s the latest tech, luxe beauty products, or a fancy kitchen appliance, deciding whether to splurge can feel like an emotional tug-of-war.
But it doesn’t have to. The key is to make spending decisions intentionally, not impulsively. Before you click “Buy Now,” run through this set of questions to help you figure out whether the purchase is worth it. If the answer is “yes” to most or all, you can hit purchase guilt-free.

1. Will I Use It Often?
The cost-per-use test is simple: the more you use something, the more it earns its place. A $300 coat worn 60 times = $5 per wear. A $90 top worn once = $90 per wear.
Ask:
Will this be something I reach for monthly, weekly or even daily?
2. Does It Fill a Gap in My Life or Closet?
Is this item solving a problem or just adding more clutter? The best splurges are often ones that make everyday life easier or more enjoyable.
Ask:
Am I missing something like this?
3. Is This the Version I’ll Want Long-Term?
Sometimes it makes sense to pay more up front if it means avoiding constant upgrades or replacements. It’s also important that you get exactly what you want. Sometimes you have a dream item in mind but when you go to the store, they don’t have it in the color you want and that might be enough to no longer make it your dream item.
Ask:
Will this last? Am I buying the version I truly want, or a “for now” alternative I’ll replace later?
4. Have I Wanted This for a While?
Impulse purchases often fade fast. But if you’ve been thinking about it for weeks or months and still want it, that’s a good sign. One giveaway is stepping back and thinking about whether or not you’ve been influenced by a trend.
Ask:
Have I thought about this long enough to be sure it’s not just a passing craving?
5. Can I Afford It Without Stress?
Even the most perfect item isn’t worth it if it wrecks your budget or adds anxiety. True luxury is feeling good about your purchase.
Ask:
Can I buy this and still comfortably cover my essentials, savings, and goals this month?
6. Does It Align With My Values?
Maybe you’re focused on quality over quantity, or buying fewer but better things. Or maybe you care about sustainability, or supporting certain brands. Or maybe you really value experience with loved ones and that’s where you want to splurge.
Ask:
Does this reflect how I want to spend? Is this aligned with my priorities?
7. Will It Make My Life Better, Even in a Small Way?
Some splurges just make your day better: a high tech upgrade to your home office, skincare that makes you glow, or a laptop bag that makes going to work a statement.
Ask:
Will this item add ease, comfort, confidence, or joy to my day-to-day life?
If You Answered “Yes” to Most or All…
Go ahead and treat yourself with zero guilt. Thoughtful splurges are not wasteful; they’re investments in your quality of life. The key is making sure they’re intentional, not impulsive.
The best purchases aren’t always the cheapest, but they are the ones you’ll love, use, and appreciate over time. Ask the right questions, spend on what matters, and feel great about every dollar you invest in what matters to you.
